WHO AM I
That's easy.
I am me, can't be anyone else so I settled for the best that I could get and that is I.
Seriously though. My name is Bill, my friends call me Gimpy Magoo. I am a semi-retired
gimp. I work at home, while helping to raise my three children, semi-retired remember? I
am an avid radio control airplane pilot and fisherman that resides in Holton Kansas. I
moved here from Washington State where it was just to darn wet for me. I am a webmaster in
my spare time when I am not fishing, flying, in my shop, playing ball with my kids, or
doing honey do's for my lovely wife. I am the perfect web designer because I am not driven
by the almighty dollar. Meaning I don't put the dollar before your satisfaction. I strive
to exceed your expectations.
MY PHILOSOPHY:
I live by two rules of design and marketing when it comes to web
site design. First being the "KISS" rule. "Keep It Simple Stupid". The
Internet is a wonderful place with lot's of fun things to do and is very easily
distracting to your typical person. This can be fun and whimsical to the average person
but deadly to a corporate web site trying to make a profit. My other rule?
"TOMA". This stands for "Top Of Mind Awareness". Any product that pops
to mind immediately when you recognize something else is TOMA. I saw WINDOWS you
think........ Microsoft eh? OK, that's pretty close to a marketing term called
"Branding" also but you get the idea. TOMA applies to all aspects of web design
from the choice of your domain name to how your site is presented. Any thought that your
site site can create or use that requires no brain power whatsoever on the part of your
customer, meaning it just flashes in there mind, is called TOMA.
Both these rules are much more involved than what I have presented in this short
paragraph. In a nut shell. You have approx. 15 seconds to grab your customers attention -
you better make it good.
MY BACKGROUND:
Sales, sales, sales.
23 years in sales and marketing in the inside and outside sales arena. From doing home
energy audits and vacuum cleaner pedaling door to door to selling air. Yes, I said selling
AIR. Trust me, it's like selling an ice machine to an Eskimo. I did it and it was fun too
:)
I have worked in the radio and television advertising and production field.
I have started and owned and sold several successful retail and service based companies.
I was selling things on the Internet before the Internet WAS the Internet to the public. I
have been the person on the other end of the tech support phone at your ISP and I have
been the webmaster at your ISP.
I attended college, sat in class and was taught things like Computer Information Systems
Management. I ended up T/A'ing within the first week.. Went for my A+ certification at the
same college. Set up their network (Novell) and hooked them to the Internet while taking
the class. Had to drop due to Illness. Heck I even took Cabinet Making, need a nice
computer desk?
Made the Deans list and joined Phi Theta Kappa - simple stuff really but I figured it
would look good on my resume- Now all I need is $2.50 and I can afford a good Latte.
My sales background combined with my computer savvy merged with my html skills mixed up
with my perspective on sales and marketing makes for a wise choice on your part for your
web site designer. OO, OO, Pick Me - Pick Me
WEBSITE DESIGN:
Any 12 year old can throw together a website and publish it
on the Internet. Any small business owner can buy a computer hook it to the Net and write
a web page about how great your product is. You'll have a great time doing it and showing
it off to your friends too. In fact - I encourage you to do just that, BUT please do it
with a web page/site that you wont, even remotely, be depending on for any livelihood
whatsoever. Your bottom line and your reputation is at stake.
Let me ask you a question. Would you produce your own television commercial? Why not, you
have a video camera.
Would you produce your own radio commercial? if not, why not - you have a tape recorder
don't you?
If you answered no to the above, that's good. Besides, you have better things to do with
your company than banging away on a computer. Better things to do like - making a profit.
I do this for a living. It's my livelihood, it's what I know. If
you don't succeed - neither do I.
It's that simple.
GRAPHIC DESIGN:
Ok, I am good at designing and implementing an effective website.
That's a gimme - there's no conceit in my family, I've got it all :)
BUT, I admit I am not the greatest at graphic design. I can do cute stuff, stuff that
looks good and loads fast and stuff that you might think is wonderful but alas. I am no
professional. Don't get me wrong, I am just practicing what I preach. If there is a
particular graphic situation that I cant handle - I'll tell you straight up. It hasn't
happened that often but it has happened. Pick up a copy of Wired Magazine or pop in the
latest Plastation 2 video game - now those guys are good!
All the graphics you have seen on the site that brought you here I designed and or edited.
What do you think?
WEBSITE MARKETING:
This is a tough one. By far the toughest of them all.
It starts with a site specifically designed for the type of marketing you will be doing.
Many tricks are employed when designing a page that are invisible to the average browser
and non professional. You must know your demographic ahead of time that you want your site
to appeal to. Your site must flow and be easily navigated by your customer and at the same
time mechanically appeal to the search engines.
Once you have the mechanics of your site in place then it's time to put the word out.
There are dozens, if not hundreds of ways to do this.
If all this makes total sense to you then by all means do it yourself - your a natural or
are well educated in marketing and site design.
By the way. The #1 answer to the #1 question is - NO, your site does NOT magically appear
on Yahoo all by itself.
